Attendance is usually free for members, non-members $10 after free first meeting.  A light supper will be provided for evening meetings.  Note that special arrangements may apply to particular meetings; see details below.

PMPs and CAPMs please note that each meeting will earn you one PDU.  Please sign the attendance sheet to allow us to verify your claim if audited. 

As a new initiative the chapter web master will now submit a claim on your behalf for the PDU earned from attending chapter meetings. You will also be issued with a confirmation of attendance for your records. This is based on signatures recorded on the attendance record so please make sure you sign it.

Dominic Siow presented “The Emotionally Intelligent Project Manager”.

The presentation explored the topical argument that Project Managers are very focused in the technical skills and project management processes, and yet have not developed their soft skills sufficiently to influence stakeholders to sustain the buy-in and support necessary to deliver successful projects.

Dominic is a peak performance consultant and trainer with Blue Visions Management Pty. Ltd. Since 2001, Dominic has dedicated much of his energy and passion to the study and application of the thought, communications and motivational strategies that peak performers use to create extraordinary results in all facets of their lives. A sought-after speaker and trainer, he has since constructed and run numerous workshops and seminars in Australia and Asia to develop the leadership and behavioural competencies of people and teams.

Eileen Heywood presented on this year's Mentoring Initiative for the PMI Queensland Chapter.

The presentation focused on clarifying the mentoring concept, opportunities and benefits for participants in a formal mentoring program, and roles, responsibilities and attributes of mentors and mentorees. Eileen also examined the experiences from the 2007 PMI mentoring partners, outlining the 2008 PMI Mentoring Program plan, and answering questions from the floor. 

 
Eileen Heywood is an authority on mentoring. Her knowledge base is built on research, personal experience and her extensive background in facilitating formal mentoring programs for a wide variety of organisations. She has presented papers on Mentoring at international conferences and has just returned from delivering such a paper at the Women as Global Leaders Conference in Dubai.

Tim Malone presented on the subject of "Tender Evaluation Best Practice"

Project managers will often find tendering and tender evaluation part of their project. Tendering should be run in logical manner, as in any part of a project. This presentation focused on the buyer planning for and executing the evaluation. As usual, preparation prevents failure. A variety of techniques and tools were outlined that have been shown to assure more reliable outcomes.

Tim Malone is the Practice Director of Gibson Quai-AAS in Queensland  www.gqaas.com.au.   He leads a professional practice who undertake consulting in strategic and operational planning and management functions and the specification, procurement and implementation of information and telecommunications services, facilities and systems.

Charl Morkel will present on "Project Management Software: Selecting the Right Tools for your Organisation and Making Them Work"

For most organisations, projects are run using an ad-hoc maelstrom of Excel, Outlook and MS Project. Although effective as personal productivity tools, they lack the integrated & centralised access needed in an enterprise context. What are the options for teams, departments and companies looking to advance their PPM capability? How does one go about the search & selection process? What are the key success factors and risks for successful adoption? What are the pros & cons of Client/Server vs. Software-as-a-Service and how does one best match them to the differing maturity levels within the organisation?

Charl has over 13 years' experience managing the development and delivery of web-based technologies.He founded an Internet Access Provider in 1995, a web design firm in 1997 and then worked in Silicon Valley and France managing global web development projects for companies such as Levi Strauss & Co., Trader Group, and Visa. He has a BCom and MBA (advanced) from the University of Western Australia and is a certified PRINCE2 practitioner. As founder and CEO of Bluenova since 2005, he has spearheaded the introduction of Daptiv – the leading on-demand PPM solution – within the Australian market place.

Richard Greenall and Elzette Harper presented "Portfolio Delivery Management".

The presentation focused on:

  • Portfolio delivery "success" and the required portfolio management activities including selection / optimisation, benefits management and performance management.
  • Implementing portfolio deliviery management techniques.
  • Useful approaches and lessons learned.

Paul Thomson presented "The Hays Salary Survey".
 
The Hays Salary Surveys are compiled from information collected from 42 locations throughout Australia and New Zealand and from the results of a questionnaire that has been completed by over 1700 clients. The salaries quoted reflect those actually being paid or offered by employers over the past 12 months, compiled from over 15,000 vacancies handled by Hays. This information is used to show an average salary and a salary range for positions across a number of specialist divisions. In addition, the guide gives market commentary on each division illustrating the specific changes in recruitment approaches, salaries and advice for candidates in that market.

Fred Maringe (PMP) - 'Project Management Challenges in Developing Economies. A Zimbabwean Perspective'

Fred's presentation explored the challenges of managing projects in countries like Zimbabwe. He drew some parallels between Zimbabwe and Australia and discussed what impact cultural, political and economic factors can have on project management.

Fred is a PMP with over ten years experience. Has worked mostly in Zimbabwe across a number of industries including manufacturing, retail, banking/finance and currently airline travel.
 
With an IT background, Fred has been involved mostly with the implementation of Business IT Systems including infrastructure and business applications.

Richard Egelstaff will present 'A Review of Project Management Education in the UK, USA and Australia'.

In this presentation Richard Egelstaff explored different levels of education relating to project management.  The presentation was designed to help anyone contemplating recognition or seeking qualification as a project manager.  Richard explained how private providers, such as PMI or AIM compare to formal education institutions, such as TAFE and University.  He also discussed the ideas behind competency or employment based qualifications as compared to academic qualifications.  In this respect, the qualification trends in the UK, USA and Australia with particular emphasis on project management learning and employment were explored.

Matthew Tati - "Project Management at Flight Centre"

Matthew's presentation will discuss how business and technology fit into the Flight Centre structure and how the Project Services PMO works within the business and technology spheres. It will also touch on the different types of projects that the PMO is called upon to support.


Matthew has a travel technology background and moved into Project Management in 1999. He has managed projects for the Federal Government and various travel distribution companies. He is Secretary of the Australasian Chapter of the International Federation for IT in Travel and Tourism (IFITT).

Annual General Meeting

AGM business, then speaker Graham Scott - "Managing Relationship Risk in Projects".

This presentation highlights the need for effective management of relationships in projects. It covers relationships from a risk management perspective and shows how to develop a rigorous planned approach that will impact on delivery outcomes through effective group dynamics; interface management and good leadership methodologies.

The presentation is focused on a number of key points:

1.      What is relationship effectiveness / ineffectiveness
2.      What is risk from this perspective
3.      How to mitigate this risk
4.      Using a rigorous planned approach.

The presentation will use case examples; appropriate audience participation / discussion and presenter input.

The outcomes of the presentation would be that participants would have a broad knowledge of how to go about adding value in their projects through applying specific process and strategies.  

Graham Scott is an Organisational Psychologist with Masters qualifications. Prior to studying Psychology Graham worked in the Construction Industry at trade and Management levels. For the past thirteen years Graham has being working in Projects mostly in recovery around "communication" and "people issues". Graham has recently developed a rigorous approach to relationship management through a rigorous planned approach using a risk framework.

Graham lectures in the Master of Project Management at QUT. He has lectured in the MBA at QUT, is an accredited mediator with the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators. Graham is an accomplished speaker and has spoken at conferences and congress across Australia and internationally.
