Against Difficult Odds – The Pooncarie Story

Vilfredo Pareto is the 19th century professor credited with the valuable observation: most of any result comes from only a small part of the activities.

The planning phase of a greenfield mining project can be complex, with the need to simultaneously find technical solutions, establish product sales, raise finance, obtain regulatory approvals as well as creating a robust execution plan for the provision of process plant and equipment. This presentation uses the Pooncarie Project of Bemax Ltd, a new mineral sands mine in New South Wales, as a case study to identify and share those project management tools and techniques that were most useful in the development and approval of the Execution Plan for this A$176 mi project.

The Pooncarie Project was completed on schedule, under budget and formally opened by the Premier of NSW on 21 April 2006.

About Bob:

After a decade of being an "accidental project manager" in the resources sector Bob Hartley joined PMI in 1998 and achieved his PMP in 1999. His only regret was that he should have learned the gospel according to PMBOK 10 years earlier!

Since 2000 Bob has run his own consulting business, working with a small number of clients in the technology development and resources sector. His consulting "niche" is advising and coaching owner teams in "front-end" project management activities of initiation, development and planning - the area of high leverage regarding adding value.

This year Bob has taken time out to study at the Company Director's Course, and has achieved AICD Diploma.
