EXAM APPLICATION AND ELIGIBILITY

To apply to sit for the PMP or CAPM examination you are required to submit an on-line application detailing how you meet the eligibility criteria. You can submit your application online via the PMI website at www.pmi.org. Your application will go direct to the PMI head quarters in the USA for verification.

You will need to verify that you are a practicing Project Manager and that you have a minimum number of years experience (with or without a degree)

You should only apply to take the PMP Exam if you meet the eligibility criteria and WHEN you feel reasonably confident of passing.

More in depth details on eligibility and application process can be found in the PMP Handbook.

Once your application is accepted, PMI will send you a "PMP Certification Examination - Eligibility Letter" with your "Confirmation Number" and instructions on how to register for the exam locally. You are required to register to sit the exam at a venue of your choice within 12 months of receiving eligibility.

EXAM REGISTRATION

To Register for the exam please follow the directions provided on your invitation letter. This letter is sent to you on acceptance of your application by PMI Headquarters. The directions will indicate what process you need to follow to sit the exam, what testing facilities, dates and times are available.

You must quote your PMI Confirmation Number and state where and when you want to sit the exam when provided with the available options.

Refer to the following link for details on the available on-line test centres  http://www.prometric.com/PMI/default.htm.  You can register to sit the exam during standard working hours on most days. Your referenced testing centre will be able to provide up to date information. In addition to the on-line testing centres the PMI Qld Chapter sponsors two paper based examinations in Brisbane each year. These generally take place in June and November.

EXAM CONTENT

The exam is focussed on an in-depth understanding of PMI's book - PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), a project management knowledge base which is recognised as an industry standard.  When you join PMI, a CD ROM of the PMBOK Guide will be sent to you.  Otherwise you can buy it from the PMI Bookstore at www.pmibookstore.org.

The Guide to the PMBOK 3rd Edition is the prime reference for the PMP Exam, however it is recommended that you study other reference material on project management tools, techniques and project/business management practices. The exam also includes questions that test your experience as a PM.

The exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions (a-d) and is required to be completed within a four hour period. There are 25 pre-test questions in the exam (dispersed randomly). These questions are not-marked but merely included for statistical gathering. Examinees need to obtain a minimum score of 106 out of the remaining 175 questions (61%) to pass the exam.
