Certification Program Brief

Thank you for your interest in the PMI Qld Chapter Certification Program.  The following provides some background on PMI and the program.

Should you require further information please contact certification@pmiqld.net.au.

Background

Globally there are in excess of 210,000 members of PMI in 125 countries (185,000 of these having achieved certification).   The membership and certification base is growing very rapidly - there were 57,924 new members in 2005 alone!

The PMP and CAPM certifications are globally recognised Project Management certifications and are seen as a mark of recognition among Project Management peers.  The certification is transferable across countries and industries and presently the Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing region for PMI.

To be eligible for the certification, candidates must first meet specific education and experience requirements, and agree to adhere to PMI’s code of professional conduct.  Not everyone can obtain the Certification. All applications undergo an assessment to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements.  Approximately 10% of candidates are audited (against an industry standard of 3-5%).  The assessment and qualification is ISO 9001 compliant.

Qld Chapter Study Group Program

The PMI Queensland Chapter runs a Study Group Program which is aimed at helping its members to pass the PMP or CAPM exam by providing the support required to achieve it.  It is not about teaching PM fundamentals (ie. it is not a Training Course).

The Qld Chapter

  • Arranges the study group program - free of charge for PMI Qld Chapter Members.
  • Works with organisations to host study groups.
  • Provides voluntary coaching by qualified PMPs for the study group program.
  • Maintains a yahoo group knowledge base repository for exam resources and group communications.
  • Assists members with any exam related enquiries.

The program is run over 14 weeks and is based on the Knowledge Areas found within the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as shown below.

[1] NB:  A break of one or two weeks is generally scheduled somewhere in the middle of the roster (this is agreed at the commencement of the group and normally falls during schools holidays).

Groups are limited to 10 - 12 people.  Following the kick off a determination on how many groups to run is made.  In the past two - three sessions have been run concurrently. The first hour of each session is presentation style and the last 30 minutes concentrates on practice questions.   Responsibility is assigned at the beginning of the study groups for a different presenter for each topic (from the group).  By putting the material together and presenting to the group, the learning process is enhanced.

The PMI Qld Chapter provides mentors to assist the presenter with review of the material and they are also present on the night to assist with any questions the group might raise.   These mentors are PMP's so are able to offer advice on exam preparation and their experiences.

Resource Materials

The following resource materials are recommended by the Qld Chapter if participating in the study group program.

In addition to obtaining a copy of the PMBOK, it is strongly recommended that candidates who are serious about obtaining their certification and wish to join the PMI Qld Chapter study group order (at a minimum) the Rita book well in advance of when the study groups are due to commence due to lead times for delivery.

REPs

If the study group program is not for you there are a number of companies that provide pre-examination courses at varying costs. For them to be recognised by PMI they must be Registered Education Providers (REPs). The following are some of PMI's REPs who provide PMP/CAPM preparatory courses:
